Writing Prompt: Let’s Make Love (Happen)

valentinesI know some people hate Valentines Day – which is looming ever closer – but I’m embracing it anyway with this writing prompt.

Drop by a dating site or check out the personals in the newspaper(they still make them, right? If not maybe check out some archived newspapers from a decade or more ago)). Find a pair of people (they can be same sex or different – whatever tickles your fancy).

Write their first date. Then throw in something speculative! If you haven’t got your own funny/scary thing to throw at them inspired just by reading their ads, use a random number generator to grab something off this list(I’m sure you can do better though).

  1. A dinosaur (I had to include this because my son adores them)
  2. A talking animal who speaks a language only one of the couple can understand
  3. A talking table knife that thinks it is a sacred sword of legend
  4. a robot from a parallel, steampunk dimension
  5. A vortex (through time/space/dimensions, whatever you please)
  6. An obscure monster, like a hippocamp or bunyip
  7. Or one of them is the speculative element(though please, no vampires, werewolves or fey, let’s do something different)

Don’t forget to wrap up the romance too! Do things work out, will they be together forever or not or something in between?

If you post the result on your own site feel free to link to it in the comments. We’d love to hear if you were inspired by the prompt too, even if you will never let the resulting work see the light of day.

I so want to write a tale of unrequited love between two T Rexs who Just want to hug.

  2. Daniel says:

I want to write a new story with the title Love In The Wasteland, because I love that title, but not the awfully wtf story (in the bad way) that I turned in that one time. Although, there is a subplot that could maybe work as a standalone…

  3. Kristen says:

I’m thinking my paranormal detective might be receiving unwanted attentions from the sister of the leader of the local goblins. Unwanted but it’s the only thing keeping him alive. What could happen on Valentine’s day mmm…..

  4. Not quite Valentine’s Day, but it’s a first-date story featuring two veterans from a war gone horribly wrong.

    • But that’s a great thing (not the war, deviating from the original prompt). What I want to see from these prompts is new writing, people getting inspired. It doesn’t have to fit rigid guidelines, it’s a chance to get out there and show the blank page who’s boss 🙂
